There is less to this Nature cover than meets the eye.
Though atomic force microscopy crisply shows the difference between small silicon, medium sized tin and large lead atoms in an alloy crystal, this ten nanometer wide field of view affords no clue as to whether those atoms are relatively light or heavy.
There are two stable isotopes of siicon, nine of tin and four of lead, and despite this visual tour de force of size resolution, atomic force microscopy still lacks the finesse to feel the difference between neutron rich and neutron deficient atoms of the same element.
