Not So Heavy Artillery

The U.S. Army has received the  first  of 273  M777A1 lightweight 155mm howitzers.  The  5 ton , 1.7 million dollar British designed gun replaces the M198.  Four tons lighter by virtue of extensive use of titanium, and  finite element design , the M777A1 can  be slung into battle by  existing Army helicopters. After landing, its crew of five can  ready the howitzer  to fire in under three minutes, and prepare it to move out  in under two . The gun's reduced weight is tactically critical, because  ten 155mm shells with propellant weigh about a ton, and the four ton savings equals enough extra firepower to chew up a battalion

What makes this development  scary is the GPS guided Excalibur shell , accurate to ten meters at a range of up to 40 kilometers.Eat your heart out,Annie Oakley- that's ten yards at 25 miles.
